An on-site NVR (network video recorder) stores camera footage on a recorder inside your building for a one-time storage cost of roughly $50–$100 per camera as of 2026; cloud recording sends the same footage to an off-site data center for roughly $10–$30 per camera per month for as long as the system runs. Neither is automatically right. The decision comes down to your internet connection, your retention needs, and your tolerance for recurring bills, and for a growing share of commercial buildings the correct answer is a hybrid of both.

The 12-Camera Math

Twelve cameras on cloud recording at $20 per camera per month is $240 a month: $2,880 a year, every year the system runs. On-site storage for the same twelve cameras is roughly $600–$1,200 in drives, once, plus the recorder itself. Cloud has to earn that gap with off-site redundancy, automatic updates, and multi-site convenience. In some buildings it clearly does. In others it never will.

What does each option cost?

Cloud plans run $10–$30 per camera per month as of 2026, with resolution and retention tier setting where you land in that band. On-site storage runs $50–$100 per camera one time, plus the recorder itself. What does cloud recording do better?

  1. Off-site redundancy. Fire, flood, or a burglar who takes the recorder cannot take footage that already left the building.
  2. Automatic updates. Firmware and security patches apply themselves. Nobody has to remember.
  3. Multi-site access. Every location under one login, which is why multi-site operators love it.
  4. No server to own. No recorder to rack, cool, back up, or replace in year six.

What does an on-site NVR do better?

  1. One-time capital cost. You buy it once. There is no meter running in year four.
  2. Full-resolution retention at LAN speed. Every camera records at full quality without touching your internet connection.
  3. No monthly fees. The 12-camera math above is the whole argument.

The honest weaknesses: the NVR is a single point of failure, it can be stolen along with the footage on it, firmware updates are a manual chore that mostly goes undone, and remote viewing works only if someone configures it securely. None of these is disqualifying. All of them are design problems with known fixes, starting with a locked rack and ending with the hybrid section below.

Will your internet handle cloud recording?

This is the question that decides more Missouri systems than price does. Cloud recording is a constant upload from every camera, and upload is exactly where rural connections and older buildings fall short. A site on DSL or congested fixed wireless cannot push a full camera set to the cloud at full resolution, no matter what the subscription promises; the footage arrives compressed, delayed, or not at all. Is hybrid the right default?

For most commercial buildings, as of 2026, yes: hybrid is the emerging default. The NVR records everything at full resolution locally, and the cloud carries the views you cannot afford to lose (entries, registers, the yard gate) as a backup and a remote window. You get LAN-speed retention without betting the evidence on one metal box, and the monthly fee covers a handful of critical cameras instead of all of them. Cloud-connected cameras also pair naturally with remote video monitoring, where an off-site operator responds to events live.

Yes. NVRs support remote apps, but remote access has to be configured securely and firmware kept current by hand, where cloud systems handle both automatically. It works well; it just does not maintain itself.
